I was making a hop MWCR to MKJS today when the autopilot decided it wanted to head down to the center of the earth rather than the nice smooth VNAV descent we had planned. Disconnected the AP to regain control of the aircraft and pulled back, but with no repsonse. Keep pulling back further to arrest the descent, but still no response even with full back pressure. 2 seconds later, she responds, and boy does she respond!!! Now heading up at 20 degrees, but elevator control has returned to normal so I settle her back down to a smooth descent and the desired flight path.
When all is said and done, the VAFS pax complained that they were frightened by the 5g loading and I lost 5.25 points. My theory, better frightened by 5g's rather than testing the impact strength of a Boeing 737 when hitting the waters of the Caribbean.:-)
The only question I have relates to the rating scale. Lost 5.25 points for the 5g pull (thanks Wilco....) but gained 5 points for arriving early and 2.25 points for a smooth arrival in a rain storm. According to my calculations, that = 102 but VAFS4 gave me a 97 rating on the flight. Any insight to the grading system?
