Very bad news here. Full story (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8345713.stm)
Base commander Lt Gen Bob Cone said that the gunman had not been killed, as earlier stated, but was in custody.
Two other suspects were questioned, but the army now says only one gunman was involved in the incident.
Lt Gen Cone said the motive for the shooting was not known. One of the dead was a policeman, others were soldiers.
President Barack Obama described it as "a horrific outburst of violence".
US Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan
US officials identified the gunman as Major Nidal Malik Hasan
Speaking at a press conference in Washington, he said: "It is difficult enough when we lose these brave men and women abroad, but it is horrifying that they should come under fire at an army base on US soil."

Yeah sad day here in the U.S. R.I.P to all the people killed. And its sort of weird a psychiatrist out of all people would do this plus he was ranked as a major in the U.S Army. But then again everyone has problems no matter who you are.

Very sad indeed. This sort of event rings bells of Columbine and Virgina Tech which makes me wonder why we hear about all of these horrifying shootings in the USA but nowhere else, you can't blame this recent one about the public having 'the right to bear arms' because he was in the Army (duh!) but perhaps it has something to do with it.
Apparently the guy was earmarked to go to Afghanistan 'against his wishes', who wants to go to Afghanistan? :O

That's what confuses me why would he join the army if he doesn't want to fight? A person who joins the army should expect to go to war sooner or later. Just my own opinion..
Oh now there's another shooting in Orlando about 85 miles from where I live. What's going on here in the U.S!?!?!?!

Understand, that up until the Bush era, the chances of us going to war were low. We were a more peaceful nation. Most who joined did because of the college money and the other perks that go along with enlistment. The last thing anyone who enlisted before the Bush administration was going to war. Figure serve 2 or 4 years and get out with experience, the honor of having served, and some college money. Not to mention some cash if you decided to live on post.
Times have changed. Before my unit was deployed, we had soldiers claiming they were gay, taking drugs, or hurting themselves just to get out of being called into action.
This case will raise a lot of eyebrows. Mainly due to his religous beliefs and his occupation in the Army.
Very tragic on many fronts.

tis a sad event that has happend. As Ralph said, the Military was and still is one of the best ways to get a further education at a College or University. It actually has many benefits also as teaches discipline and also a respect for other human beings as well!
I beleive that sometimes the UK should go back to National Service for the youth that are not continuing on past GCSE's for a higher education as it gives these young people a job and also something to do rather than get involved in drugs/gang warfare and other stupid things that are making the UK a worse place. Get them in the Army and teach them some honor and straighten them out before setting them into the world to find a job (as its a great thing to put on the CV also!)
Its a shame that Human Factors is just coming into full swing now as back in the day, people never had this guidance or education to watch out for people who are not acting normally and could of possibly avoided a bad situation like this one!
Im my profession we are being taught more and more about Human Factors and why its not just the persons fault for doing something wrong, but to look at the mentality of the people and also see how their life outside of work is going??
Many small things that were overlooked in the past, now are becoming a big role in job aspects and the working conditions rather than just that person and blaming him/her for the problem
Prayers to those that lost love ones
