Hello Fellow Airmen:
I have done some recent flights into MHTG - Toncontin Intl and have come up with the following suggestions. As you are aware this is a somewhat difficult airport to approach and depart from due to its surrounding mountain terrain.
I suggest the following. When approaching Toncontin from MWCR, intercept the 360 radial of Toncontin VOR, 112.3 and fly it inbound. You can hop on this about 50 or 60 from destination on your descent. Once established on the 360 radial you may descend to 9000ft. Then simply follow the approach for rwy 01 in the link below. The VASI lighting is staged so you will come in a bit high and have to dump it in at the end. You are meant to land at a point on the 6132 foot runway leaving 5000 usable feet within which to stop. If you are not tracking the 360 radial inbound to Toncontin VOR when you descend to 9000, you will crash into terrain. There is a gap in the mountains on this radial.
I believe night ops are not undertaken into this airport. I believe we may consider setting flight sim for daylight instead. Up to you.
On departure from 01, simply turn immediately to 360 degrees and climb to 12,000 ft and then proceed on course.
Suggested route from MWCR: <ULISA UR644 CISNE UR890 ANGEL DCT> (ULISA departure from MWCR as posted in event post above).
