Go to your SB options>multiplayer tab

Make sure you've got your "range of planes added to the multiplayer session" to at least 40 miles.

Also, make sure the problem isn't that you're just flying in slightly less busy airspaces. They're might just be no one online.

Just let them know that you are new, and alot of controllers will be more then helpful!

Note*! There is a new squawkbox available, squawkbox 4 which is fully functional with FS2004 and FSX!

I just tranistioned into SB4 after using FSInn for my first few flights. FSInn is really cool and has a lot of cool features and apps, but I was having stability issues and nasty error messages when getting out of FSX. If they ever fix the bugs, I would go back to FSInn in a heartbeat.

I am using SB4 on a FSX/Vista platform and it has been stable for me so far. It does not have all extra features, but it does do what it was designed to do well. The learning curve on SB is a bit longer than FSInn as FSInn is more of a GUI, but once I got SB set up it has worked perfectly.

Any other addons that you would consider "must have" for VATSIM flying with SB4?
